A Roadmap to Sustainable Co-Housing for Older People.
Seminar/ Workshop supported by Forward Scotland

Within the next 10-20 years the number of people over 60 will form a substantial part of the British population. Present housing facilities, including sheltered accommodation and residential homes will not be able to cope with this increase. Alternative methods of housing this age group must be found. With the increasing emphasis on living in a sustainable manner, it is preferable that future housing design is ecological, economical and habitable.

The planned workshop will focus on the main issues and barriers relating to the construction, ownership and management of a sustainable co-housing scheme for older people. This aim will be achieved by realising the following objectives:

  • Lessons learned from the continent and other co-housing schemes (Maria Brenton and New Leaf)
  • Barriers to the use of recycled material in the construction industry
  • Architectural issues - incorporating renewable energy in the design criteria
  • Options for ownership - legal and financial aspects

The structure of the day will consist of morning presentations from different members of the community. The afternoon session will then allow for discussion and dissemination of findings, with a view to outlining further research. 50 delegates have been invited to the workshop.

The programme will shortly be announced. However, if you require further information please e-mail info@sustainabilitycentre.org
