Dr Charles Russell - Senior Research Fellow
Charlie worked in New Zealand for 7 years after
finishing his PhD at Aberdeen University. Following working in Blue
Sky research developing biosensors for contaminated soil, he moved
to New Zealand’s Ministry for the Environment and subsequently
Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet to work on Greenhouse Gas
Emissions Reporting for the Kyoto Protocol. He worked with a range
of stakeholders, research providers and extensively with the United
Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Secretariat
to develop issues such as benchmarking Carbon, ensuring Good Practice
in reporting frameworks and establishing the registry mechanism
used in the Kyoto Protocol.
Having returned to the UK, he is now establishing
new Carbon footprinting approaches for use at the local level in
Scotland. Building on the strong research capacity of Glasgow Caledonian
University’s Sustainability Centre, he is working with colleagues
to establish a centre of excellence in emissions reporting and benchmarking
in Scotland. His presentation will focus on the role of carbon footprinting
as a management tool, relating the economic and social benefits
achievable by using and applying this type of technology, in a low
carbon future in Scotland.
