Working Towards Inclusive and Effective Ways of Living

The Sustainability Centre in Glasgow (SCG) is concerned with the evolution of evidence- informed practice and thinking. The SCG combines expertise on social, economic, managerial and environmental issues to take a multidisciplinary approach to research, policy and practice for sustainability.

Research activities

The Sustainability Centre in Glasgow is a newly established centre providing a comprehensive sustainability research capability. The research interests of SCG are broad and span:autonomous housing; urban regeneration; environmental and social justice; construction processes; knowledge mapping and sustainable procurement; the reuse of recycled products; modelling & measuring sustainability; sustainable resources use; and skilling the workforce in sustainability solutions.

Relevant experience includes undertaking applied research projects in social surveys, monitoring and evaluating communities, assessing policy implementation and legal requirements, improving business competitiveness, undertaking waste management and energy efficiency assessments for the built environment. The SCG is currently involved in the following studies:

  • Developing urban sustainability assessment metrics, models and toolkits
  • Sustainable urban environmental study on mapping knowledge in glass recycling
  • Sustainability appraisal in the strategic planning process
  • Corporate management of environmental impacts
  • Organisational analysis of environmental performance
  • Evaluation of ISO 14001
  • Construction waste minimisation
  • Identifying the training needs of waste management professionals
  • Identifying and supporting the needs of resilient communities - practicalities and the decision making process, implementation and review.
